Classic Turtle Sago Plate

Rp2.200.000

Turtle Sago Plates are commonly found in Asmat wood carving. The bottom of the sago plate resembles a turtle’s back and also features the Yoniki motif, a traditional symbol of prestige among the Sentani people, with an ancestral figure carved at the top. The design consists of a central dot within a circle, representing the Ondofolo, the tribal leader who holds authority over customary governance. In the past, this sacred motif was exclusive to the Ondoafi, or head of the adat community, symbolizing power and leadership. In Asmat rituals, particularlly in an ceremony, sago containers play a central role in fostering unity and reconciliation between families after a head hunting practice.
