Green Red Qing Dynasty Zhongbao Wooden Coin

Rp1.000.000

Qíxiáng Zhòngbǎo (祺祥重寶) is a rare high-denomination Chinese cash coin briefly issued in 1861 at the very beginning of the Qing dynasty’s Tongzhi period. Following the death of the Xianfeng Emperor, court officials proclaimed the short-lived era name Qíxiáng (祺祥) and began minting coins with this inscription. The era name was abolished after only about sixty-nine days due to political upheaval during the Xinyou Coup, and was replaced by Tongzhi (同治), causing most Qixiang coins to be recalled and melted down. The term Zhòngbǎo (重寶) means “heavy treasure” and denotes a higher-value coin, usually equivalent to ten standard cash coins, while Tōngbǎo (通寶) refers to regular low-denomination circulating currency. Because Zhòngbǎo coins were heavier, higher in value, and minted in much smaller quantities, surviving examples of 祺祥重寶 are exceptionally rare and highly collectible.
