Lombok tobacco containers are traditionally used to store tobacco, betel leaves, or medicinal herbs. Betel chewing, often accompanied by tobacco, has long symbolized hospitality, respect, and communal bonding in Lombok. The removable lid is topped with a carved bird, symbolizing freedom, protection, and the connection between the earthly and spiritual realms. Along the sides of the container are carved ancestral faces, representing reverence for ancestors, continuity of lineage, and spiritual guardianship. Beyond everyday use, the container is also linked to Lombok’s long standing cockfighting tradition, where it could discreetly hold small blades, reflecting its layered role in social rituals and local practices.
