When the Dutch arrived in Indonesia, they brought significant changes to the social and cultural landscape, including influencing the art of batik. By the 19th century, Pekalongan had become a vibrant Indo-European business hub, giving rise to the buketan motif, a design inspired by European floral aesthetics. Derived from the Dutch word boeket (meaning “bouquet”), the buketan motif features elaborate arrangements of flowers accompanied by birds, often set against a plain or subtly patterned background. This design reflects a harmonious blend of European naturalism and traditional Javanese craftsmanship, symbolizing the cultural exchange of the era. Beyond its beauty, the buketan motif carries deep symbolic meaning: the flowers represent growth and prosperity and the birds symbolize peace and hope.
