Single Mbaru Rona

Waerebo’s traditional house is constructed in a distinctive cone-like shape that embodies both ancestral knowledge and cultural values. In Flores society, the separation of men’s and women’s spaces is a deeply rooted tradition, particularly during ritual activities and traditional processions, including the use of separate bathing areas. This spatial division is practiced to preserve chastity, social order, and spiritual balance. This sculpture represents Mbaru Rona, the man’s house. It functions as an important ceremonial space associated with traditional processions related to leadership, lineage, and social responsibility, such as succession as heir to the throne and one’s rank as a husband and father. Mbaru Rona is also a place for safeguarding ancestral heirlooms. The horn symbol, prominently featured, is consistently used to represent bravery, strength, and masculine authority.
