This Dani warrior or tribal chief’s status symbol, traditionally worn hanging from the front or back of the upper body, features the shape of an ancestral head. It serves as a protective talisman for its owner—a village chief—guarding against evil spirits that may dwell in the surrounding jungle. Beyond its spiritual significance, this item also represents pride, status, and wealth. In the Baliem Valley of West New Guinea, it has historically functioned as a form of local currency, used in bride price negotiations, feud settlements, and trade. The fossilised shells embedded at its center are believed to embody the power and wisdom of past generations.
