This intricately carved Batak wooden container features a lid topped with two squatting ancestor figures positioned back-to-back, symbolizing unity, mutual protection, and the guidance of ancestral spirits. Its body is decorated with two carved cows (lombu), honoring the Batak’s four revered domesticated animals—pigs, lombu (oxen or cattle), hoda (horses), and horbo (buffalo)—which hold important roles in ceremonies as emblems of wealth, status, and ritual significance. At the center is the Gorga Silintong motif, shaped like a swirling whirlpool and believed to possess mystical powers. Traditionally, this sacred design adorned the lower side walls of Batak Toba houses belonging to respected figures such as datu (shamans), raja (chiefs), and guru (teachers), signifying wisdom, authority, and spiritual strength.
