Sago Plates are commonly found in Asmat wood carving. This sago plate features the Yoniki motif, a traditional symbol of prestige among the Sentani people, with an ancestral figure carved at the top. The design consists of a central dot within a circle, representing the Ondofolo, the tribal leader who holds authority over customary governance. In the past, this sacred motif was exclusive to the Ondoafi, or head of the adat community, symbolizing power and leadership. Used during festivals and ceremonies, it often served to hold sago worms, symbolizing the transfer of ancestral power. In Asmat rituals, particularly in an ceremony, sago containers play a central role in fostering unity and reconciliation between families after a head hunting practice.
