Ancestor Spirit Long Earrings Hudoq Mask

Hudoq is a traditional ritual mask of the Dayak Bahau people from East Borneo. The name Hudoq means “incarnate,” referring to ancestral and sacred beings that descend to bless the earth with fertility. Worn in the Hudoq dance at the start of the planting season or after harvest to drive away crop pests, ask for protection, and give thanks to the ancestral spirits. Mostly, the masks depict a combination of pests and harmful animals that threaten rice crops, such as birds and pigs.This one symbolises human faces representing Dayak ancestors. This particular mask is also an older version, showing large pendulous earrings and natural earth pigments rather than modern paints.
