This Batak heirloom box was traditionally used to store treasured possessions and jewelry. Its form reflects the Batak traditional house known as Bolon, with Singa carvings adorning both ends of the roof. The Singa, with its human-like face and protruding tongue, is revered in Batak mythology as a mythical guardian symbolizing authority and charisma. At the center, lizard carvings represent Boraspatini ni Tano, a motif associated with wisdom and prosperity, reinforcing the box’s role as both a protector of valuables and a vessel of cultural heritage.
