Bulu Parhalaan is a traditional Bataknese calendar made from bamboo, with its name derived from the word hala, meaning scorpion. Since ancient times, the Batak people have shown a deep interest in astronomy and astrology. They recorded this knowledge using natural materials such as bamboo, animal bones, and tree bark. This calendar was primarily used by shamans (dukun) to determine auspicious and inauspicious days, serving as a guide for daily life and important rituals. People believe that starting something on a bad day may bring misfortune. Interestingly, the signs and their meanings vary, as each shaman interprets the Parhalaan differently, using personal symbols and markers.
