Chinese Naga Ikat

The dragon motif, originally from Chinese culture, is absent in Sumba and was introduced through ceramic vessels entering the region. This design stands as evidence of historical trade interactions with Chinese communities, exchanging porcelain items like plates, jars, and bowls for Sumba’s sandalwood. Other complementary motifs include the crocodile symbolizing power, the turtle representing greatness, and the karihu signifying hardworking women.
