This painting depicts a young Balinese Legong dancer dressed in her traditional attire. She is adorned with a Gelungan, an ornate headdress decorated with flowers, beads, and ornaments that embody the elegance and refinement of Balinese dance. In her hands, she holds a Bokor, a ceremonial bowl often filled with flowers or offerings, used as part of the ritual or narrative elements in the performance. Tari Legong, originating in 19th-century royal courts of Bali, is a classical Balinese dance known for its refined, intricate movements and expressive gestures. The term Legong derives from the word leg, meaning flexible or graceful movements. Traditionally performed by two to three young female dancers, who have not yet reached menstruation to symbolise purity and grace. The dance is accompanied by Gamelan Legong or Batel, an ensemble that provides rhythmic and melodic complexity.
