In times of conflict, the Asmat shield is traditionally named after an ancestor, with the belief that the spirit of the forebear will inhabit the shield. Often carved in a stylized phallic form, it symbolizes power and vitality. This ancestral presence is believed to protect the warrior not only physically—from spears and arrows—but also strategically, offering guidance through cunning and deception. Thus, the shield serves a dual role, functioning as both a defensive and offensive weapon. In modern times, these shields are used in ceremonial dances or displayed outside homes to ward off potentially hostile neighbors and unwelcome visitors.
