The flying fox, known locally as “tar,” is a motif commonly found in Northwest Asmat art, it’s a large fruit bat is associated with aggressive and successful head-hunters, serving as a symbol intended to intimidate the enemy. Shields from this region are typically smaller and roughly oval-shaped, differing from the larger shields of other Asmat regions, with some even made in miniature versions. The central frame of these shields is often adorned with repeating, identical motifs stacked vertically. The top of the shield is designed in a flat, triangular, or oval shape, resembling a face that may include carved eyes, a mouth, and scar-like tattoos, adding a distinctive and symbolic touch.
