Full Wooden Sahan

Rp3.750.000

Sahan is a traditional container used by healers of the Batak tribe to store herbal medications. Sahan plays a practical role by preserving the potency of herbal medicines. It also serves a ritualistic function as a storage place for ancestral ashes, which are traditionally placed in front of fences to ward off evil spirits and protect against disease. While it is commonly made from buffalo horn with artistic carvings, this particular piece is crafted from wood and intricately carved with Batak motifs. The motif is called Desa Na Tolu, it symbolizes the Batak philosophy of existence and harmony in Batak society. It is a code that symbolizes the rules of mutual respect, as well as a code of ethics for relationships with family members, especially one’s spouse and in-laws. Additionally, the ancestral figures carved on the top and bottom of the Sahan honor the ancestors and connect the living with the spiritual realm.
