This terracotta statue portrays Gajah Mada, a legendary prime minister of the Majapahit Empire, renowned for his strategic brilliance and unwavering dedication to uniting the archipelago. Crafted from clay, the statue embodies the four elements—earth, water, air, and fire—reflecting both the Hindu philosophy of life and the intricate process of its creation. The elephant, revered as the vahana (mount) of Indra and a symbol of strength, nobility, and social status, amplifies Gajah Mada’s legacy as a powerful and influential leader. In the Majapahit era, elephants were a status symbol in Trowulan society, reserved for royalty and the elite, and were often used in warfare, further emphasizing their association with power and prestige.
