Headhunting was once a widespread practice in Papua, deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual traditions of many indigenous tribes. It was associated with warfare, rituals, and the belief in acquiring spiritual power or prestige. While headhunting has long ceased, it remains a significant part of Papua’s historical and cultural heritage. This sculpture depicts a headhunting warrior in a carved war canoe, with a chicken head adorning the prow—a powerful symbol of headhunting. A male figure, clad in traditional attire, stands on the canoe holding a spear and carrying a backpack with a weapon, suggesting his return to the village after a successful headhunting ritual. Inside the canoe lies another spear and a severed human head, highlighting the accomplishment of his journey. The scene is completed with a feathered paddle, traditionally used by men to navigate the rivers skillfully.
