Ikat Mahang Kurangu Karihu

This particular Ikat design has existed for approximately 30 years. The initial dark brown hue of the woven fabric has gradually transitioned to a more grayish shade over time. The key figures in this design include “Mahang,” which signifies a lion, representing strength and power. Another element is “Kurangu,” translating to lobster, which symbolizes the ancestral belief in a new or transformed existence after death, suggesting hope for eternal life or a change from the current state. Positioned at the center is “Karihu,” depicting an ancient butterfly, serving as a symbol of hardworking women.
