Witi Kawu Weaving

Each shell motif holds special meaning. At the top is Karihu, meaning “ancient butterfly,” representing women as hardworking individuals. The second row features a flower motif called Patola Ratu, originally worn by priests, nobles, and kings. It symbolizes human connections with others and the environment, guiding indigenous peoples in aligning their actions with their values. Umma, on the third row, refers to the house where women gather to weave, a significant identity for Sumbanese women who believe in weaving and staying at home. Finally, Mamuli at the bottom symbolizes female genitalia, the most crucial precious metal item in Sumbanese culture, signifying women as givers of life.
