Bothekan is a traditional herbal powder container, used to store various types of herbal powders and spices made from plants. The bothekan is designed with three-tier shelves, each featuring nine compartments to organize different herbal ingredients. When preparing jamu (traditional herbal medicine drink), the jamu maker selects the powders based on the severity of the illness and the appropriate combination of herbs. Common ingredients include turmeric, tamarind, ginger, temulawak (Java ginger), cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. The fish carvings on the bothekan symbolize prosperity, abundance, and harmony. In Javanese culture, fish are often associated with good fortune and fertility due to their connection to water, which represents life and nourishment.
