Moko, also known as a “rain drum,” is a small bronze drum traditionally used by the people on Alor Island, East Nusa Tenggara. While it can produce a distinctive sound, especially when struck by falling rain, its role goes far beyond music. For the Alor community, the moko holds deep social and economic significance: it is used as a dowry, a medium of exchange, and a symbol of status and heritage. The design of the moko is influenced by the Bronze Age Dong Son culture of North Vietnam, which entered Indonesia in the early centuries AD.
This influence is evident in the sun motif on the drumhead, featuring a radiating raised pattern surrounded by concentric rings of geometric designs.
