Nilung Sisa Matang, meaning “turtle” in the local language, is a traditional ikat weaving motif from Uma Pura, Ternate Village, Alor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Renowned for its deep red hues, achieved through a meticulous dyeing process using mengkudu root, the fabric reflects the region’s preference for richer, darker tones compared to Sumba’s brighter reds. The dyeing process, requiring multiple rounds of dyeing and months of storage between dippings, can span years to achieve shades from rust to maroon. Primarily used for women’s clothing and sarongs in important cultural ceremonies, such as weddings and funerals, the textile embodies both artistry and deep cultural significance.
