Hudoq is a traditional ritual mask of the Dayak Bahau people from East Borneo. The name Hudoq means “incarnate,” referring to ancestral and sacred beings that descend to bless the earth with fertility. Worn in the Hudoq dance at the start of the planting season or after harvest to drive away crop pests, ask for protection, and give thanks to the ancestral spirits. Hudoq masks portray a mix of pests and dangerous animals that threaten rice plants, such as birds and pigs, along with eagles symbolizing harvest protectors and human faces for ancestors. This particular mask depicts a pig, one of the main animals believed to damage crops.
