During the late colonial period, batik pagi sore developed as a reflection of changing social conditions, where a single cloth served multiple occasions from day to evening. Within this format, the buketan motif became prominent, influenced by Dutch presence in Pekalongan, an Indo-European business hub in the 19th century. Derived from the Dutch word boeket, buketan features elaborate floral arrangements and birds rendered in soft pastel colors, distinguishing coastal batik from inland traditions. The motif reflects European naturalism interpreted through Javanese craftsmanship, symbolizing cultural exchange during the colonial era. In meaning, the flowers represent growth and prosperity, while the birds convey peace, hope, and harmony between cultures.
