Lombok tobacco containers, commonly found in the western region, are traditionally used to store tobacco, betel leaves, or medicinal herbs. Betel chewing, often accompanied by tobacco, has long symbolized hospitality, respect, and communal bonding in Lombok. The container features a curved base and cylindrical body with slightly tapered walls, adorned with intricate animal relief motifs and painted in vibrant commercial colors. Its removable lid is topped with a carved rabbit, symbolizing fertility, gentleness, and prosperity, while frog motifs along the sides represent rain, renewal, and the continuity of life. Beyond everyday use, the container is also linked to Lombok’s long standing cockfighting tradition, where it could discreetly hold small blades, reflecting its layered role in social rituals and local practices.
