The wayang kulit performance involves a fascinating interplay between the puppet master (dalang) and the screen (kelir). Hanging delicately, beautiful lamps encircle clay or metal pots that are filled with coconut oil through spouts. Besides their role in creating the shadow play, these lamps have an essential function of protecting the dalang’s head, which remains just inches away from the heat of the flames during all-night performances. Additionally, you can often find a skull-like image known as the kala head above temple portals, along with the recurring symbol of the Tree of Life.
