Sarong Red Snake Weaving

The symbol of the snake carries a meaning similar to that of the lobster. In Sumbanese belief, just as a snake sheds its skin to renew itself, there is a belief in the continuity of life beyond death. This process of shedding old skin represents the necessity to leave behind our past continually. The act of renewal and transformation is seen as a metaphor for the belief in new life and the ongoing journey beyond the current existence.
