Noken is a traditional handmade bag from Papua, crafted from natural materials like tree bark fibers. These materials are spun into durable threads and woven into a strong, net-like structure. A smaller version of the bag is often called Mitutee. Highly multifunctional, noken is used in daily life by Papuans to carry produce, seafood, firewood, and even babies. Beyond its practical use, it carries profound cultural symbolism, representing peace, fertility, and a prosperous life. The art of making noken is a cherished tradition passed down among Papuan women, affectionately known as “Mama Noken”, who play a key role in preserving this heritage.
