Sahan is a traditional container used by healers of the Batak tribe to store herbal medications. Sahan plays a practical role by preserving the potency of herbal medicines. It also serves a ritualistic function as a storage place for ancestral ashes, which are traditionally placed in front of fences to ward off evil spirits and protect against disease. While it is commonly made from buffalo horn with artistic carvings, this particular piece is crafted from wood and intricately carved with Batak motifs. The spiral motif featured is called Gorga Simeol-Meol, derived from the word Meol-meol, meaning graceful curves. Its flowing lines create a sense of classical beauty and symbolize joy. This decorative motif enhances the container’s aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the ancestral figures carved on the top and bottom of the Sahan honor the ancestors and connect the living with the spiritual realm.
