The Head Shield – Northwest

Rp20.000.000

Central Asmat shield tend to be rectangular, decorated with large motif, often carved like a figurative “penis” symbolizing power. The Bipanew motif in the middle (like mirroring latter C) , originally from Northwest Asmat, is a design inspired by a traditional nose ornament crafted from shell—a significant symbol associated with head-hunting. In this carving from Central Asmat, the motif appears in a simplified form, reflecting the local carving style. Central Asmat shields often feature more abstract motifs with nearly symmetrical, mirrored pairs. At the top of the carving, a human figure represents an ancestor, honoring the connection to lineage and heritage within the artwork.
