Turtle Sago Plates are commonly found in Asmat wood carving. The turtle head is usually carved at the tip of the plate, it features crocodile carving that symbolizes strength and ancestral connections in Asmat culture. According to Asmat mythology, the god Fumeripitsy defeated a giant crocodile but was badly injured. A compassionate flamingo nursed him back to health, after which he carved two statues and created a drum. As he danced, the statues came to life, becoming the first ancestors of the Asmat people. Used during festivals and ceremonies, it often served to hold sago worms, symbolizing the transfer of ancestral power. In Asmat rituals, particularly in an ceremony, sago containers play a central role in fostering unity and reconciliation between families after a head hunting practice.
