Turtle Sago Plate with Human Figure

Turtle Sago Plate are commonly found in Asmat wood carving. Its shape resembles a turtle shell, with a carved turtle head at the tip of the bowl. This plate features a human figure at the bottom part symbolising their ancestors and embodying their spiritual presence. It also features the Yoniki motif, a traditional symbol of prestige among the Sentani people. The design consists of a central dot within a circle, representing the Ondofolo, the tribal leader who holds authority over customary governance. In the past, this sacred motif was exclusive to the Ondoafi, or head of the adat community, symbolizing power and leadership. In Asmat rituals, particularly in an ceremony, sago containers play a central role in fostering unity and reconciliation between families after a head hunting practice.
