Mbitoro is Komoro tribe ancestor pole, located west of the Asmat region, Papua is a ceremonial woodcarving traditionally created for funerary feasts and male initiation rituals, symbolizing the presence of recently deceased ancestors. Carved from wild nutmeg wood, the pole typically features one to three intertwined human figures. Closely related in form and function to the Asmat Bijs poles, Mbitoro poles reflect the Kamoro belief that the physical body remains represented in the carving after death, while the spirit departs. Beyond honoring the achievements of the deceased, the Mbitoro serves as a powerful symbol of ancestry, continuity, and ritual tradition.
