This copper batik stamp features the Madu Bronto motif, an ancient pattern that remains widely used in Surakarta and its surrounding regions. The design resembles elongated, grid-like forms similar to safety pins arranged in orderly rows. Its name is derived from a honey-sucking beetle, symbolizing sweetness, while in Javanese the word bronto refers to falling in love, desire, or romantic passion, leading to the popular interpretation of Madu Bronto as “the sweetness of love.” Another interpretation combines madu (sweet) and bronto (to fight), suggesting the idea of striving or struggling within sweetness. Traditionally, this motif was worn by men when visiting or courting their beloved, and it was also commonly used during engagement ceremonies or gatherings of prospective grooms, signaling romantic intention and commitment.
