Wayang Wahyu, a form of Indonesian shadow puppetry, uniquely blends traditional Javanese storytelling with Christian narratives. Originating in the 1960s, this form of wayang was developed to depict stories from the Bible. One notable example is Wayang Jesus, which portrays the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
The creation of Wayang Wahyu involved a collaborative effort by educators and clergy, who aimed to adapt the traditional wayang medium for Christian teachings. Initially referred to as “Wayang Katolik,” it was later renamed Wayang Wahyu upon advice from PC Soetopranito SJ. The first performance took place on February 2, 1960, featuring stories such as the birth of Jesus Christ and the Fall of Man. These performances quickly gained approval from church authorities and have since been used to celebrate major Christian holidays and church anniversaries.
