Wayang Yesus

Wayang Wahyu, a form of Indonesian shadow puppetry, uniquely blends traditional Javanese storytelling with Christian narratives. Originating in the 1960s, this form of wayang was created to depict stories from the Bible. One notable example is Wayang Yesus, in which Jesus Christ himself is represented as a wayang character, portraying his life and teachings through the traditional Javanese medium.
The development of Wayang Wahyu was a collaborative effort between educators and clergy who sought to adapt the traditional wayang form for Christian teachings. Initially called Wayang Katolik, it was later renamed Wayang Wahyuupon the advice of P.C. Soetopranito SJ. The first performance took place on February 2, 1960, featuring stories such as the Birth of Jesus Christ and the Fall of Man. These performances soon gained approval from church authorities and have since been used to celebrate major Christian holidays and church anniversaries.
