Batak Calendar, known as Parhalaan, is not merely an artifact but a reflection of Batak ancestral knowledge used to guide ceremonies and daily life. Based on observations of natural phenomena, astrology, the movement of the sun, and lunar cycles, it was traditionally consulted by datu (ritual specialists) to determine auspicious days for activities such as planting, harvesting, weddings, house building, traveling, and warfare. Many Batak calendars and ritual objects also feature lizard motifs associated with Boraspati ni Tano, the Batak earth deity symbolizing fertility, protection, prosperity, and harmony between humans and nature.
