This dried calabash gourd, traditionally used for storing water, is adorned with intricate Batak cosmological carvings. The lid features a figure known as Naga Morsarang—a human riding a horse—symbolizing spiritual wisdom, strength, and the authority of the datu (Batak ritual specialist), while the horse represents a bridge between the earthly and spiritual realms. Flowing gorga siméol-éol motifs decorate the sides, derived from the Batak word meol-meol, meaning “to sway gracefully,” and symbolizing joy, harmony, and beauty through their elegant curving lines. Another side features mythical serpent or dragon imagery associated with Naga Padoha, the underworld dragon in Batak cosmology believed to embody cosmic balance, protection, and the connection between the upper world, earth, and underworld. The inscription “Lake Toba” suggests that this piece was produced more recently as a souvenir inspired by traditional Batak ritual objects.
