Wave Wooden Bone Box (S)

This Benteng Chinese box was traditionally used to store jewelry, personal keepsakes, mahjong tiles, or ceremonial items. Created by the Peranakan Chinese community of Tangerang, whose roots trace back to the 15th century, such objects reflect a rich blend of Hokkien, Malay, Sundanese, Betawi, and Chinese cultural influences. The box is adorned with a carved wave motif. In Chinese symbolism, waves represent the continuous flow of life, resilience, and prosperity, reflecting the ability to navigate challenges and embrace change. As a symbol closely connected to water, an element associated with abundance and good fortune; the motif conveys wishes for harmony, success, and enduring prosperity.
