Among the Dayak communities of Borneo, the tradition of elongating the earlobes was often accompanied by the use of heavy brass ear weights, worn as symbols of beauty, status, and social identity. This single ear weight is shaped after the mangosteen fruit, a motif associated with abundance, fertility, and prosperity due to the fruit’s valued place in Southeast Asian culture. Within many Dayak societies, elongated earlobes were historically regarded as a mark of elegance, grace, and refinement, particularly for women, while the weight and craftsmanship of the ornaments reflected the wearer’s prestige and cultural identity.
