This Majapahit-style kendi is a traditional Javanese earthenware vessel distinguished by its unglazed red terracotta surface and a distinctive mammiform spout, symbolizing fertility and life-giving water. Inspired by kendi from the 10th to 14th-century Majapahit period, these vessels were designed to keep water naturally cool through the evaporation of the porous clay.Beyond its practical use, the kendi held deep ritual significance and was often used in ceremonies, weddings, and as sacred funerary offerings. Its handle-less form and narrow neck allowed water to be poured directly into the mouth without contact, reflecting the refined social etiquette and hygienic practices of ancient Javanese society.
